WINDOW ROCK

The seat of the Navajo Tribal Council, the reservation's governing body, is on its eastern edge, along the New Mexico border. It was based for fifty years at Fort Defiance, a US cavalry outpost, until in the 1930s WINDOW ROCK was established as a new capital. Named for the natural stone arch on its northern side, it's not a great place to get a grasp of Navajo culture, but it does at least have gas stations, shops and a motel , the showpiece Navajo Nation Inn at 48 W Hwy-264 (tel 928/871-4108 or 1-800/662-6189; $50-75). The adjacent Navajo Tribal Museum (summer Mon-Fri 8am-5pm & Sat 10am-4pm; rest of year Mon-Fri 8am-5pm; donation) gives the background on tribal history and displays high-quality crafts.
