WINDOW ROCK |
| |
| The seat of the Navajo Tribal Council, the reservation's governing
body, is on its eastern edge, along the New Mexico border. It was based
for fifty years at Fort Defiance, a US cavalry outpost, until in the
1930s WINDOW ROCK was established as a new capital. Named for the
natural stone arch on its northern side, it's not a great place to get a
grasp of Navajo culture, but it does at least have gas stations, shops
and a motel , the showpiece Navajo Nation Inn at 48 W Hwy-264 (tel
928/871-4108 or 1-800/662-6189; $50-75). The adjacent Navajo Tribal
Museum (summer Mon-Fri 8am-5pm & Sat 10am-4pm; rest of year Mon-Fri
8am-5pm; donation) gives the background on tribal history and displays
high-quality crafts. |
